You’re the God of this City
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are.

There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City

Last week, 15 adults from all across Mennonite Church USA gathered together to sing, pray and plan the five worship services for adults that will take place at convention in Phoenix in just under a year. During our time together, worship band leader Esdras Ferreras led us in singing this song, “God of this City.” Before singing, Esdras invited each one of us to meditate on the city of Phoenix, and to enter into a prayerful awareness of the ways that God has been, is and will continue to be working in the city of Phoenix.

It is with this Spirit of openness and awareness that we are preparing to travel together to convention in 11 months. We know that God is at work in Phoenix currently, through the hands and feet of the members of our local Mennonite churches, the non-profit partners that we are building relationships with, and many others who live and work in Phoenix on a day-to-day basis.

Over the two days that we spent together, the worship planning committee s

pent time meditating on a variety of scriptures and putting “flesh onto the bones” of outlines for each worship service that had been developed earlier. Although there is still much work to be done, I left the weekend excited about the potential for creative worship that lies ahead.

As you prepare yourself to come to Phoenix, I hope that you are preparing yourself to be inspired. Please be in prayer not only for all of the planners, the worship leaders and convention planning staff, but also for the city of Phoenix and all the work that is ongoing there.
