We had a feast in Phoenix and I am so full, it is hard to write a few highlights about the great banquet we attended. It was a colorful meal with all the nationalities and languages represented in the praise band and worship speakers from Monday night, Cheryl Bear, Native Canadian to Dr. Elizabeth Soto Albright (our new Mennonite Church USA Moderator) on Friday night.
I report as adult delegate from Bethel Mennonite Church at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We spent 14 ½ hours at tables of eight (over 600 delegates in all), meeting our church leaders, hearing reports, adopting resolutions, and kicking around issues including Immigration. We missed some of our Hispanic brothers and sisters, yet discovered it was important to be in Arizona (a battleground for many attempting to cross the border to the USA). We also learned a lot from our table partners who went Wednesday to court in Tucson and/or the Mexico Border, and from two California pastors of immigrant congregations in one of several seminars we attended. One of Martin’s highlights was reconnecting with many people we previously knew and making new friends.
We were all sisters and brothers together in Christ’s Kingdom and nationality did not matter. We all belonged at the table (Mennonite Church USA Convention) and left to continue to work towards unity of all people in God’s Kingdom.
Now, mark your calendars and plan to be part of Mennonite World Conference Global Assembly July 21-26, 2015 in Harrisburg, Pa., and the Mennonite Church USA convention in Kansas City from July 1-5, 2013.
