There’s Something in the Air at Convention: Glen Guyton

There is just something about the Mennonite Church USA convention.  It is something tangible I can feel it in the air.

The rush of air as teens prepare for worship.
The lack of air as over 4,000 students jump up and down during praise time.
The stinky air as hot and sweaty groups return from service projects.
The chill of the air inside the convention center as people of all ages smile and greet you.
The heaviness of the air in the hotel room as doors slam and sponsors pray for curfew.
The air of anticipation as you wonder if your face if going to show up on the big screen.

I love the Mennonite Church USA convention.  I probably wouldn’t be working for the church if it was not for this event.  It helped me be a better youth pastor and a better leader.  It is one of the purest forms of ministry that we do as a collective body.  I must admit that as a former youth pastor my heart truly belongs to the youth gathering, while my head and attention belong to the entire event.

Nothing can compare to the energy that goes into this five-day Mennonite event.  Each day is a memory that shapes those who attend.  My memories start with Wichita 1995, but there is a hole I notice each time someone mentions San Jose 2007, the only convention I missed.

I started off as a youth sponsor, became a youth pastor, and I have led worship for both youth and adults.  Now I have the privilege and great responsibly of being the convention planning director.  You might say my journey has been somewhat of a dream come true.  So many great things happen at convention.  So many relationships are started.  So many memories are generated that will last a lifetime.

I hope you don’t miss Phoenix 2013.  This convention promises to be different.  Not only will we come together as all kind of Mennonites, but we will have the opportunity to engage and learn about real issues that affect our world.

There is just something about the Mennonite Church USA convention.  It is something tangible I can feel it in the air.

Come, breathe, and be filled with the Spirit of God as we gather in Phoenix in 2013.
