Step Up Program
At this summer’s denominational convention in Orlando, we’re offering a fresh way to involve high school youth representatives into the delegate sessions. The goal of “Step Up” is to prepare and launch young people into future involvement as denominational delegates and church leaders who are involved with the broader church.
- To give high-school age youth a voice at the Future Church Summit as the denomination seeks to articulate a future vision and essential values for itself
- To prepare youth for future participation and leadership in the broader church
Each conference and constituency group is invited to nominate representatives who are already attending convention to participate in this program. Each conference will be asked to name three representatives: one male, one female and one person from a racial/ethnic group. Each constituency group should nominate two representatives to participate. Representatives should be regular attendees at a Mennonite Church USA congregation who are rising high school sophomores or older.
The program may be opened up to additional youth from these groups after the initial deadline depending on the response.
Note: Step Up representatives need not be appointed delegates by congregations, conferences or constituency groups
Part-time participants will be invited to join the Thursday afternoon delegate session, which includes much of the traditional “business” agenda, as well as the closing delegate session on Saturday morning. They will be designated as observers to the sessions as a way to prepare them for future engagement with the broader church
Full-time participants will be invited to join all five sessions of the Future Church Summit, beginning Thursday evening and ending Saturday morning. They will be full participants in these sessions, and will have the opportunity to directly speak into the conversations that will, a) help articulate a vision for the future structure of the denomination and, b) speak into the essential values that we hold as a denomination. We encourage youth to join as full-time participants because we believe its very important for youth voices to participate in these conversations. Full-time participants also have the option of joining the Thursday afternoon “business” session as observers.
Both full- and part-time participants will meet for pizza, interaction, and orientation to the program during the 4:30-5:30 seminar slot on Wednesday, July 5. After convention, debriefing and reporting for all participants will take place via social media.
Please register your Step Up participants by April 24. After this date, we will open registration to additional interested youth from each conference and constituency group through May 5 if spaces remain. We will cap the number of full-time participants at 60. Please indicate on the registration form if any participant is in need of financial aid to assist with the registration fee and someone from our planning team will contact you.
